Schools are very slow to embrace change. Web 2.0 tools are more intimidating to teachers than when students first starting using the Internet for research. Filters and firewalls will keep most schools from jumping onboard the Web Cruise Line.

I think your metaphor is very telling. It really references the entire Internet since its inception as a text based tool before the web. I agree I think this is going to be an exciting journey to be on and in many ways a turning point to our global society development. As our society changes to accommodate these new forms of communication and collaboration so will our education system.
Thanks for sharing the great articles.

IM is a great tool. It is easy to be distracted and students can abuse IM. Planning and instruction becomes very important. I believe that students need to be taught when and how IM is appropriate. This is certainly not an easy task.

I think Social Networks are here to stay. The benefits of social networking far out weight their faults. I think that the educational value is limitless. We have no choice social networks are here to stay. I think the students really value these networks.

The first step is always the scariest and the riskiest. I completely understand the struggles with having so many classes, but maybe blogging can be a way to bring some continuity between all those classes. The students don't necessarily have to blog about the same things/ideas, but having an assignment in which the students respond to class issues with their blogs will help give them stronger understanding of concepts, and that might free up time during the school day that you would have used to cover the same things.

Hi Kim,
This is my first response to a blog therefore I will be brief because I want to make sure I am positng correctly. I agree that adding blogs to the curriculum will take some revamping and time.
I tend to jump in feet first so I am planning to review social networking with a 6th grade group and then have them collaborate online. I think I will use a Wiki though.

Blogging is a great tool. It gives your students a voice. Guidelines are very important. The Web a public place and you must know how to act appropriately.

Involve your students in creating the guidelines for blogging. They usually have a lot to offer.
